Granny square crochet patterns abound on the internet! These delightful squares of fiber goodness are always in vogue. Make one for a kitchen hot pad or a hundred for an heirloom blanket or anything in between.

They make the perfect summer take-a-long project. Small, portable, and great to have when you’re in line, waiting at the doctor’s office, or passing the time as a passenger. Here are some of my favorites.

A few are just a teensy bit different than the traditional square, but different enough to keep you interested without being overwhelmed. Enjoy!

The Simple Square

The Simple Square

The square can be made smaller or bigger, just skip a few rounds or add some extra. It’s a simple design, but it’s perfect for playing with colors and shades. You can find the pattern by Gunilla Karlsson here on Ravelry, or visit her blog here.

Kaleidoscope Granny Square

WOW! Can you say bright, bold, beautiful colors! The use of front post stitches adds the lovely texture to the circle part of the design, creating a kaleidoscope-appearance. You can find the pattern here on Ravelry, or here on The Loopy Stitch blog.

Have you ever found a project you love, but couldn’t find the pattern? Sharron over at Annie’s Place had that happen and decided to try her hand at working up the pattern herself. Lucky for us, she’s posted the pattern here, and included a photo tutorial to go along with the written instructions.

The Sunburst Granny Square

These squares are just lovely, aren’t they? Lots of puffs and clusters add a great dimension to these simple squares. You can find the pattern here on Ravelry. If you’d like to check out some of Priscilla’s other free patterns, you can visit her here.

Anemone Granny Square

This fun square can be found here on AllCrochetPatterns.Net They have a ton of things to explore and download for free, so if you’ve got a few minutes, you might want to hang out there.

Squaring The Circle

Spincusions does a wonderful tutorial on Squaring the Circle which you can find here. I love the modern vibe of this pattern, proving once again the humble granny square is always in vogue.

Daisy Granny Square

I love this square exactly as it is! Beautiful blues like a summer sky with a daisy center, this square is just delightful. Instructions for the daisy center can be found here. Once you have that mastered you’ll be directed to go here for adding rounds to the daisy center.

Ana Maria Granny Square

Single color crochet granny square

The only downside to most granny squares is changing colors. More colors mean more of those pesky ends to weave in before you can call a project complete. Now if we could all hire someone to do that, it wouldn’t be a big deal. If you love weaving in ends as much as I do (NOT), then a single color square is a great option. You can find the instructions for this Ana Maria square right here. Charted instructions are also included if you like that sort of thing;-)

Vintage Granny Square

Only two colors and five rounds will have you whipping out these adorable squares by the dozens! Laura over at HappyBerry has the instructions for you AND two video tutorials for you visual types. The videos are fantaastic! I can totally see this square as the component in a table runner for your dining room. Use red as the contrast color to spiff up your table for Christmas. LOVE it!

Granny’s Table Runner

Crochet Table Runner

If you like to make dish cloths, than this is the perfect project for you! While you can use any weight and type of yarn for this table runner, 100% cotton would be ideal! Those little bits leftover from dish cloth knitting? Use up those scraps for the center flower in this design. You can find the instructions here!

Hope you enjoyed this round up of free granny square crochet patterns. If you’d like to check out my latest granny blanket you can see it here. Or, if I didn’t find just the right pattern for you, take a look at these books from amazon that are chock full of motifs and project ideas!

Hi Tessa–Each of the patterns has a text link. Most of them say something like, “Pattern here”, or “here on Ravelry”. If you click the text it will bring you to the pattern. If you still have trouble, give me the name of the name of the square you like and I’ll send you the link.
