Who knew that macrame would gain an unprecedented popularity in recent years? It’s true what they say, “Everything old is new again.” Macrame is the art of knotting cord or string in patterns to make decorative articles. In case you missed the wildly popular 1970’s fad, macrame is a ton of fun and many patterns have been updated to reflect a more modern vibe. I’ve put together some of my favorite beginner projects for you if you’d like to give this craft a whirl. (And you definitely do!)
Macrame Coaster
These simple macrame coasters are a perfect place to begin your journey into the world of knots. Trust me, you won’t be able to make just one, especially once your friends get a look at these lovelies. They also make great hot pads. Once you’ve got the idea, you could even expand on the theme and make placemats or a table runner. Or make them all! You’ll find the tutorial here.
Mini Wall Hanging
This tutorial uses ONE basic knot to create a beautiful, minimal macrame wall hanging. Create this piece in under an hour! This project gives you an excellent base from which to try a more advanced project. It’s all about the square knot!
DIY Macrame Earrings
Do you know how many knots there are in each of these earrings? Three! Just six square knots in all and you’ve got yourself a dynamite new pair of earrings. The best part is, you probably already have a pair of hoop earrings that you can jazz up with this DIY macrame earring tutorial.
Macrame Bracelet
It’s the updated findings that make these macrame bracelets irresistible. Making just one of these simply will not do, not when there are all sorts of colorful cords to choose from. An arm full of these stylish bracelets is really the way to go. These bracelets would make great gifts, don’t you think? They are made to be adjustable, so no need for exact measurements. You can find the tutorial here.
Macrame Camera Strap
Well, this macrame camera strap is a major upgrade from what came with your camera. You can customize the length and pick a color that works for your style. I don’t know about you, but I don’t really care to have the strap on my camera with the brand name up and down the length of it in BIG BOLD letters! (Just make sure the swivel clasps you choose will work on your camera). You can find detailed instructions right here.
Wavy Macrame Wall Hanging
This project requires a bit more skill than some of the others, but the video tutorial is fantastic. If you think this wall hanging will work in your space, don’t hesitate to give it a go. It’s really a unique piece that friends and family will surely admire. Ok, covet;-) The detailed video tutorial is here.
Knotted Necklace
A series of square knots precisely placed and a few beads and you’ve got yourself this fabulous macrame necklace. You might even consider using mercerized cotton thread, the kind generally used for crochet doilies. I think that would make a wonderfully delicate piece.
Owl Keychain
This little guy is just adorable! More of an advanced beginner project, I couldn’t resist including this knotted owl. He can be used as a purse charm, a necklace, or a keychain decoration. You can find the video tutorial here. You might want to spend some time on the Macrame School website. They have all sorts of projects you can try as your skills improve.
Scandinavian Knotted Trivet
I’m not sure this project would be considered macrame in its truest sense, but it does involve knots and it’s quick and easy and a fabulously useful little project. The trivet looks pretty hanging on the wall in your kitchen when not in use. Give it a try! You can find the tutorial right here.
Thanks for stopping by the blog. I hope you found an idea or two you can’t wait to try!
I will love to learn the earrings and the owl !!!
