Are you a small dog parent? I’m a Chihuahua Mama myself and an avid knitter and with Winter just around the corner, it’s time to whip up a batch of new sweaters for the herd. I usually stick with plain and simple, but I found a few cabled sweaters that I think would be great fun to make. Here’s a roundup of small dog sweaters you can knit in a flash! Enjoy.
Simple Stockinette Small Dog Sweater
The beauty of a simple pattern is that once you know what you’re doing, you can jazz it up and make it your own. It’s a snap to add a cable down the back, or add length to the turtleneck. . .er, Chihuahua neck;-) The instructions for the sweater pictured above can be found here for free😉
K2 P2 Ribbed Dog Sweater
A simple ribbed body, and garter stitch front panel means this little sweater can be worn alone, or as a layer under or over another sweater for added warmth. You can find the pattern here.
Cable Sweater Pattern
This is a fabulous pattern! I love that there is no actual “sleeve” where the front legs fit through the sweater. That just makes it so much easier to get on and off the fur kids. The instructions for the pattern can be found here.
The Lookout by Drops Design
Not sure you can handle the cables required for this sweater? Drops Design provides 18 video tutorials to help you with the pattern. They also provide you with a yarn converter so that you can make this lovely with the yarn you have on hand;-) The pattern is here.
Classic Cabled Dog Sweater
Knit this stylish sweater in any of five sizes and protect your best friend from the cold. You can make the sweater with the off-white yarn as pictured, or you can choose a feminine pink or a more macho grey and the sweater will look just as adorable. The instructions from Red Heart are right here.
Pupcake Sweater
You will find the chart for the intarsia cupcake right here. The designer has a number of adorable patterns for small dog sweaters on her site. You’ll have to scroll down a bit to find the chart. Perfect birthday suit, don’t you think?
I hope you found a pattern here that you just can’t resist making for your small dog. Winter is coming. . .knit faster!
AWW SO CUTE !!! My wee Chihuahua will LOVE to parade around the town in any one these. About to get started this weekend on making at least 3 of them.
Thank You so much
I’m a Chihuahua mama too! Hope your baby loves them!
I’M sure she will what wee Chi wouldn’t. I also knit sweaters and blankets for the Chihuahua Rescue so that every wee dog (or puppy) goes home with a sweater and their own matching blanket.
good one you for your time and effort, I wish there were more people who able to help care for dogs and animals
I tried to click the link but couldn’t get any of them to open. My husband has a 2 pound chihuahua that would look lovely in one of these
Hi Bette,
I tried each of the links and they are working. I suspect you have a pop-up blocker set on your computer or a setting that needs to be changed in your browser. Either of those could prevent the links from opening properly.
Did you post the patterns or just the designs? I love to knit but I do follow patterns. Thank you. Viviane
Hi Viviane,
Each of the sweaters has a link to the pattern that you can follow. The link is typically something like “click here” for the pattern. But, to make it easier, here are the links:

Does anyone have an archived copy of the Cable Sweater from Ollianaknits? The link doesn’t have her blog anymore and I cannot find it anywhere.
Thank you so much!
